THE LESSONS

ABOUT THE LESSONS

I teach from my music studio at home in Wellington. Lessons of thirty minutes are usually sufficient for beginners, and sometimes up to an hour for advanced students. I teach all ages, from seven up.

I get to know you, the student, and find out what your aims are – exams or just enjoyment, or to work towards playing a particular piece or composer – and then design a course to suit you. My approach is friendly, but I do insist that practicing is done as without it there can be little progress.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • To play the piano and read music. I follow a structured course ensuring learning is thorough and progress is both measurable and consistent.
  • Sight-reading. I encourage students to learn and develop their sight-reading skills, whatever level they may be. It enables you to explore a greater variety of music and become more skilled at accompanying.
  • Technique: scales and arpeggios, armweight, legato and finger independence, relaxation, and an understanding of posture at the piano. These are all aspects of technique.
  • Music theory is incorporated into lessons to enhance understanding and musicality.
  • Repertoire in different musical styles.

It is a source of enormous pleasure to me to observe a student developing musicality and expression.
