ABOUT ME

Philip Garson, piano teacher in Taunton

PHILIP GARSON

Oxford University MA Modern Languages
Trinity College London Piano Diploma (ATCL)

The first piece I remember learning was Bach’s Minuet in G, which I learned on a paper piano sellotaped to the kitchen table. I started lessons aged eleven and that year Grandmother gave me the complete Beethoven sonatas in two volumes. Of course I was not able to play many of them for many years, but it sowed the seed. I was especially inspired by listening to the music of Beethoven and Chopin. I have played the piano ever since and over the years have given numerous recitals locally.

TO MY MOTHER

On the record-player Schnabel plays
Sonatas Op. 2 by Beethoven.
The piano pours its liquid notes
Like benedictions of eternal grace
And all at once I feel it’s spring;
Grape hyacinths and wall-flowers scent the air,
The April sun adds lazy warmth to the reflective joys of Eastertide
And as when first fell on my ears
These heavenly sounds I’m twelve years old,
With life spread beckoning all before
and the breadth of genius by my side.

After a career in publishing and bookselling, I have returned to full-time music to share my love of the piano with my students.

The piano is a wonderful instrument that will give you a lifetime of pleasure. The solo piano repertoire is vast and of course there is also the possibility of accompanying other musicians, singers and playing piano duets. Playing music reduces stress, aids relaxation, and exercises the brain!
